For the Love of Lent

I’ve written before about how much I like the season of Lent; https://karenbemmes.wordpress.com/2012/02/22/spiritual-spring-cleaning-3/. ‎ Lent, as a season, gives us the opportunity to consciously become a better version of ourselves and to deepen our connection with the Divine. This year, like last year, I am giving up computer games; not because I can’t think of anything else to give up, but because, at times, computer games are an all too convenient way for me to hide from becoming the better version of myself I long to be. As much of a reprieve as they are to my sometimes over active brain, they are also a stumbling block to eliminating the things that cause my brain and my body stress, namely unfinished projects. I currently have six of them.

Fortunately for me, I also have a group of friends that have areas of their lives that they would like to improve. Each of us has different needs, but each of us is also aware that we work better as a group. We lift each other up, cheer each other on and give a loving yet firm verbal kick in the pants when we need it. Most have clutter issues and will focus on getting one box of clutter per day out of their home. Some have projects like me that have remained undone for way too long. Some are learning to balance work and fun and will allow themselves some play time each day they de-clutter a box. No one tells anyone what to do. We just support one another in the process, and some days, just that energy from others is enough to inspire me to do what I know will make me so happy when I do it, despite my resistance to do it.

This year I have an added level to ponder as I make my way through Lent. This morning, a beloved brother of one of my aunts passed away. I took a walk to celebrate his life and to pray for him and his family. While I was praying for him, I felt an overwhelming sense of love for my family that is mourning, but it also made me think about how I want to live the rest of my life. I believe that we are all given talents we are supposed to share with the world. In my case, it is the gift of words. I know that I am supposed to use that gift to uplift others, and I hope I do that through this blog. I also know that there are other things I’m supposed to do with this gift, but those darned unfinished projects seem to keep getting in the way. So, the next six weeks of Lent are an opportunity for me, with the help of some great friends, to work on those projects, finish them and make way for the real work I’m supposed to do in this life. I want to live a life of purpose, not just a life of days, but for me, that means getting a few other things in my life in order to let that happen. Hopefully, this Lenten season will provide the vehicle to an even more fulfilled life with lots of love, happiness and joy.

What are you willing to give up or do to take your life to the next level? Maybe you are taking your first baby step and are willing to give up something for Lent for the first time. Maybe you are practiced at giving up and sacrificing and you need to make way for some fun. Maybe you need to get a group of friends together to give you the energy to tackle some of the bigger issues in your life. If you are in that place but don’t think you have the support system, I’d be happy to cheer you on. This really can be the best year of your life. Small actions lead to small successes which lead to bigger actions and bigger successes, and no matter what anyone else tells you, no success is too small to be celebrated. Do something today and build on it tomorrow and keep building until you get to your next best place. It’s worth your time, your effort and the better life that awaits. Thanks for being you and have a great day.
